Young Company is TRP’s program for ages 5-25 and allows them to work with professional artists to develop skills for the stage or behind the scenes.

“My older brother was at Oliver on his tour in the 90s and we went to see him,” says Tom.

“The first time I got into acting was with the Young Company. In fact, my brother and my sister had both done it before me.

“I took part in a program called Frère Jacques dans Le Tambour. It was great.”

Tom was part of Young Company all through high school.

“I had never done anything like this before. As a family we didn’t really go to the theater except for pantos with the school, but we did after school workshops and clubs involving the theater.

“I took a lot out of it. I made a lot of friends, many of whom are still good friends to this day, and I really enjoyed the focus.

Tom recalls some of his fondest memories with Young Company.

“One of the first shows I did with Young Company, I had to die on stage,” he joked.

“I got a pretty big role and I had to give a death speech and die right before intermission. I don’t know what it is, but it made me feel like a good actor.

“I learned a lot about creating theatrical, which carried over to the rest of my career. I gained a lot of confidence and presentation skills. Standing in front of a lot of people can be quite scary.

Tom has come full circle in many ways, as he is now a theater practitioner and writer. He says his career has been hugely influenced by Young Company.

“I’ve done about a million different things since I left school, but the skills I learned during Young Company have had a huge impact on all of that.

“After finishing college at 18 I did a basic music technology degree in Plymouth which kept me going. While there I started leading workshops for theater.

“The theater runs an assistant practitioner training program which I went through and learned even more skills.

“I then started writing shows, directing them and doing a bit of production. For about five years I was one of the co-producers of the Plymouth Fringe Festival.

Tom now works with the current Young Company of TRP, inspiring young people who were in the same position as a few years ago.

In October 2021, Tom co-hosted the Young Company show “When This Is Over”. It was staged in the amazing immersive Market Hall Dome in Devonport.

“I kind of came full circle in some ways. Either that or I’m hard to take down,” Tom jokes.

“The work I do as a practitioner is always a lot of fun.

“I remember what it was like to be that person going to TR2 for the first time with lots of people and being a little uncertain and then being in those rehearsal rooms.

“Having the opportunity to offer the same experience to young people today is extremely rewarding. I just hope I can give them half the experience I had when I was their age.
